With over 15 years of expertise in crafting captivating and interactive user experiences, specializing in multimodal and AI interactions, I've had the privilege of working across diverse domains including music, open source, IoT, digital assistants, and consumer products.
My approach involves understanding people's personalities, emotional behaviors, and motivations. I explore aesthetics, modes of interactions, and their means to simplify and enrich lives with technology, believing in crafting intuitive designs that resonate with people's lifestyles.
Having grown up in Colombia, a land of vibrant contrasts, I've had the opportunity to live in various countries, immersing myself in diverse cultures. This journey has been characterized by continual adaptation and change, which I love.
I have worked in different aspects of how technology could enhance our everyday life, I've designed a wide variety of systems including in-vehicle interactions, mobile, web, cloud services, consumer electronics and a musical ecosystem experience. From how we experience cities when we are on the move, how mobiles could be better tools as in the Ubuntu Touch project; how we learn and experience music and how the envision the future piano with the Future keyboard project with Yamaha R&D; how we make our homes more secure and controllable with WeMo; how we explore, learn and express our creativity in the 3D world with Sprout by HP; and lately on helping families organizing their busy schedules with voice-forward experiences with the Amazon Alexa personal assistant and its devices ecosystem. All this has helped me to have a holistic approach and see how computing naturally can be integrated into our daily activities and blended into our environments to help us feel powerful and smart.
I’ve been passionate about the opportunities that brings the interaction between our digital and physical worlds. I’ve strongly advocated for user-centered design by building empathy during the product development process. I'm interested in both, the strategic and the practical aspects of design from ethnographic user studies, ideation, visualization persuasive storytelling and concept generation as well as system definition, wireframing, prototyping, visual design and implementation follow ups. I find collaboration and teamwork essential to create and implement great experiences.
My people-centric approach has help me to find the patterns and the behavioural gramma from a deep understanding of the user's insights and has driven my design work along the different projects and teams I have been part of.
I come originally from an industrial design background, but my interests have shifted to a more systematic approach, into designing for a more integrated experiences, bridging the digital with the physical world together as a response to our needs for more complete, multi-sensorial and balanced interactions. I believe in a holistic approach, where all small details are been considered to fit perfectly together into a whole so people will perceive it as one unique experience rather than individual elements.
In June 2006, I received my Master's degree in Interaction from the Umeå Institute of Design in Sweden. At the institute, I acquired an extensive set of practical skills and methodologies. Among these are physical and software dynamic prototyping methods for early user testing and idea exploration, ideation and brainstorming methods, participatory design and ethnographic research as user observation techniques, conceptual and practical project approaches, sketching out user scenarios and capturing videos from research to make sure user's insights are really part of the designs principles and concepts.
At the school me and my team presented our innovative design-research techniques at the Microsoft Design Expo in 2005 and we won the price for the Best Design Process.
My academic and professional experience in countries ranging from Colombia, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Japan, China, the Netherlands, the UK and USA have given me insight into the benefits and challenges of working in a multicultural environment and designing for both local and global markets.
